The Charlotte 49ers women's tennis team (9-9) is seeded third in this weekend's Atlantic 10 Championships, April 20-22, in Monroeville, Pennsylvania.
The 49ers begin their quest for the Atlantic 10 Championship and the league's automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament when they battle 14th seed La Salle in the first round, Friday, April 20 at 10:30 am. If the 49ers win that match, they would advance to face the winner of sixth seed Duquesne and 11th seed Fordham in the quarterfinals, Friday, April 20 at 6 pm. The semifinals are Saturday, April 21. The championship match is scheduled for Sunday, April 22 at 10:30 am.
All six players in Charlotte's probable singles lineup have posted double-figures wins this season led by 22 wins from freshman Ana Spivakovsky, who has claimed A-10 Rookie of the Week honors three times this season. Senior Kathy Robey, who holds the program's career record for singles wins with 77, is second on the team with 16 wins. Sophomore Koren Fleming is third on the team with a career-high 15 wins including three straight victories entering the tournament. Senior Ali Piacente has reached double-figure wins for the fourth straight season with her 12 singles wins this season. Piacente has teamed with Spivakovsky to form the 49ers top doubles team who enter the tournament with 18 victories including seven straight. Junior Yana Stoeva has recorded 11 singles victories. Junior Michelle Alexander rounds out the 49ers double-figure winners with a career-high 10 singles wins including six victories in her last ten matches.
Last season, the 49ers reached the A-10 Championship match with victories over Saint Louis and Xavier. The 49ers runner-up finish in the 2006 A-10 Champioinship was the best league finish in the program's history.
