Monroeville, PA - Freshman Ana Spivakovsky defeated a nationally ranked player for her school-record 25th singles victory of the season but it was not enough as the 49ers (11-10) lost to Richmond, 4-1, in the Atlantic 10 semifinals.
Richmond won two doubles matches to claim the doubles point. At number one doubles, Charlotte's Spivakovsky and Ali Piacente were trailing Richmond's Beatrice Grasu and Robin Carter, 6-5, when the match was stopped. At number two doubles, Charlotte's Koren Fleming and Michelle Alexander lost to Richmond's Pamela Duran and Ashlee Vosters, 8-4. At number three doubles, Charlotte's Kathy Robey and Candace Cunningham lost to Richmond's Xenia Schneider and Jessica Hubbard, 8-6.
Richmond won three singles matches to advance to the A-10 Championship match. At number one singles, Charlotte's Spivakovsky posted a 7-5, 7-5 win over Richmond's Duran, who is ranked #98 in the ITA national singles rankings, for her school-record setting 25th singles victory of the season.. At number two singles, Charlotte's Robey lost to Richmond's Carter in three hard fought sets, 6-0, 4-6, 6-1. At number three singles, Charlotte's Piacente lost to Richmond's Grasu, 6-2, 6-0. At number four singles, Charlotte's Fleming was leading Richmond's Vosters, 7-6, 2-4, when the match was stopped. At number five singles, Charlotte's Yana Stoeva lost to Richmond's Schneider, 6-4, 6-3. At number six singles, Charlotte's Alexander was trailing Richmond's Hubbard, 6-3, 2-3, when the match was stopped.
The 49ers battle Massachusetts in the Atlantic 10 Championship third-place match, Sunday, April 22 at 10:30 am.
