49ers Blank Duquesne To Advance To A-10 Semifinals

Monroeville, PA - The Charlotte 49ers (11-9) blanked Duquesne, 4-0, to advance to the Atlantic 10 championship semifinals. The 49ers face Richmond in a rematch of last season's championship match in the semifinals, Saturday, April 21 at 1 pm.

The 49ers won two of the three doubles matches to claim the doubles point. At number one doubles, Charlotte's Ana Spivakovsky and Ali Piacente had their eight match winning streak end with an 8-2 loss to Duquesne's Jacqueline Hughes and Rebecca Poole. At number two doubles, Charlotte's Koren Fleming and Michelle Alexander won their third straight match with an 8-6 win over Duquesne's Johanna Bezjak and Rachel McGowan. At number three doubles, Charlotte's Kathy Robey and Candace Cunningham won their fourth straight match with an 8-5 win over Duquesne's Andrea Sailer and Alexandra Albano.

The 49ers won three singles matches to claim the overall victory. At number one singles, Charlotte's Spivakovsky won her 24th match of the season with a 6-3, 6-0 win over Duquesne's Bezjak. Spivakovsky's 24th victory ties the school-record for wins in a season. At number two singles, Charlotte's Robey was leading Duquesne's Hughes, 7-5, 3-3, when the match was stopped. At number three singles, Charlotte's Piacente was trailing Duquesne's Poole, 6-2, 5-4, when the match was stopped. At number four singles, Charlotte's Fleming won her fourth straight match and her 16th of the season with a 6-4, 6-4 victory over Duquesne's McGowan. At number five singles, Charlotte's Yana Stoeva was leading Duquesne's Sailer, 6-4, 4-2, when the match was stopped. At number six singles, Charlotte's Alexander won her fourth straight match and her 12th of the season with a 6-3, 6-2 victory over Duquesne's McNamara.
