East Tennessee State Edges Charlotte, 4-3

Niners Come Up Short in Tight Matches

Charlotte, N.C. - Charlotte stretched East Tennessee State as far as it could but could not come up with the victory in a 4-3 decision in women's tennis, Sunday.

Charlotte won three singles matches but fell in a three-set decision at #3 singles and dropped a second set tiebreaker at #2 singles in falling short against the Buccaneers.

ETSU grabbed the doubles point thanks to an 8-3 victory at #1 doubles and a hard-fought 8-6 decision at #2 doubles. Charlotte's Kathy Robey and Yana Stoeva won the #3 doubles match, 8-6.

In singles play, Charlotte's Ana Spivakovsky won at the #1 slot, 2-6; 6-2; 6-3 and the 49ers won at #5 singles (Stoeva d. Elena Volobueva, 6-3; 6-0) and #6 singles (Michelle Alexander d. Vita Moskaliova, 7-6 (7-4); 6-4). But ETSU's Olya Batsula topped Ali Piacente in three sets at #3 singles (6-3; 2-6; 6-4) and Masha Ilina edged Robey at #2 (6-2; 7-6 (7-5) to go with Tara Byrne's victory at #4 to capture the win.
