Charlotte, N.C. - People watch with baited breath as National Signing Day comes and goes and this year the Charlotte 49ers Softball Coaching Staff is proud to announce the addition of six student-athletes to the signing class of 2009.
This year's signees include four infielders and a pair of outfielders as the softball squad continues to bolster its team in its efforts to capture Atlantic 10 conference gold.
Brittney Brinkley, Nikki Gayle, Brianna Gwaltney, Lindsey Holloman, Virginia Prince and Chelsea Stamey all opted to join the Niner softball family by signing their National Letters of Intent.
"We are excited to have such an athletic group of position players for the class of 2009," said Head Coach Aimee DeVos about her signees.
Brinkley joins the team from Chesapeake, VA, where she is a middle infielder in the Chesapeake Public Schools.
On top of being a two-time second team All-District honoree, Brinkley also was named the team MVP last season. A shortstop and second baseman by trade, Brinkley also boasts a strong academic record as she was named the marshall of her junior class and is also an honor roll student. Brinkley also plays for the Virginia Legends U18 Summer Traveling Squad.
Gayle comes to Charlotte from Bear, Delaware where she is an outfielder at Caravel High. While working the outfield and also contributing at first base, Gayle received the Coaches Award at Caravel and also is a member of the National Honor Society.
Gwaltney, the second infielder of the '09 signing class, continues a growing trend of Californians coming to the Queen City as she hails from Anaheim Hills, Calif.
Gwaltney was named to the All-Tournament team at the Michelle Carew and Cypress tournaments and also is a three-time winner of the Scholar Athlete award at Canyon High while also being named to the Honor Roll and Principal's Honor Roll.

Holloman joins the 49er family from Kings Fork High School in Suffolk, Virginia.
A third baseman by trade, she earned second team All-District honors while also picking up first team accolades from the Suffolk News Herald.
Last season, Holloman, who also is a pitcher at Kings Fork, was named the team's Offensive MVP. Holloman plays for the Richmond Ruckus fall travel team and hit at a .433 clip in the fall for the Ruckus.
Prince, a Cumming, Georgia native, will join the 49ers as a first baseman. Prince goes to Forsyth Central High School and was named a senior captain for the 2009 spring season.
She was an All-County selection in 2006 and is an honor roll student in the classroom. She also received the Coaches Award at Forsyth Central, the 2008 regional runners-up, during the 2006 campaign.
Local product Chelsea Stamey will also join the mix for the Niners as she will stay at home following a strong high school career at nearby Butler High.
Stamey was a two-time All-Conference player at her second base post. She has played on Butler's three state title winning teams. Butler was ranked as the second best high school softball team in America by the USA Today in its June 2008 poll, following a perfect 29-0 season.
During Butler's State Championship run last season, Stamey hit at a .364 clip and recorded a perfect fielding percentage. Stamey is also exceptional in the classroom and is a member of the National Honor Society.
Charlotte will open the softball season on February 13th when it hosts the Green and White Tournament at the D.L. Phillips Softball Complex.
