Niners Wrap Up Regular Season with Four-Game Weekend Slate

Lone Senior Emily Forbes to be Honored Sunday

May 1, 2008

Charlotte, N.C. - Coming off an 8-0 shutout in game one of midweek doubleheader action at Elon, the Charlotte 49ers (31-26; A-10: 11-5) will conclude their 2008 regular season schedule this weekend with a pair of games against Atlantic 10 foe Temple Friday and Saturday before taking on Saint Joseph's in a twin bill Sunday at the D.L. Phillips Softball Complex. On Sunday, the 49ers will honor lone senior Emily Forbes on Senior Day.

With a sweep of the two opponents, Charlotte, who is currently ranked second in the league, can secure a bye for the first round of the conference championship. Going into the weekend, the 49ers own a 5-3 all-time record against Temple and a 2-0 record against Saint Joseph's.

In the circle, Charlotte is led by freshman ace Katy Hackett (14-13), who currently ranks second in the 49er single season record books with 153 strikeouts on the season, just 18 away from taking the lead, with a 1.85 ERA. Joining her is sophomore Emily Jeffery (16-11), ranked second in the conference in wins, who has posted a 2.44 ERA in over 160 innings of action.

Offensively, the 49ers are anchored on the offensive end by junior catcher Jaime West and sophomore outfielder Serena Smith, who have contributed 36 and 35 RBI on the season, respectively, to rank both in the top five of the conference. Junior second baseman Sarah Malene has crossed the plate 42 times thus far in the 2008 campaign, tying her single-season record from 2006, and has collected 27 stolen bases, ranking her third in the record books. Forbes joins West, Smith and Malene on the 49er offense with 10 RBI on the season on 35 hits in 143 at-bats.
