Hackett Shuts Out Saint Louis as Charlotte Advances in A-10 Tournament

Freshman Moves into First Place All-Time in Single-Season Strikeouts

May 7, 2008

Box Score

Charlotte, N.C. - Behind a three-hit shutout from freshman Katy Hackett and an RBI single in the sixth inning from sophomore outfielder Serena Smith, the second-seeded Charlotte 49ers (33-29; 12-8 A-10) defeated sixth-seed Saint Louis (23-32-1) in the first round of the 2008 Atlantic 10 Softball Tournament Wednesday afternoon at the D.L. Phillips Complex. Notching seven strikeouts in six innings in the circle to bump her season total to 172, Hackett moved into first place all-time in the 49er single season record books.

Charlotte racked up five hits in the game, Smith leading the way with two. Junior second baseman Sarah Malene, freshman outfielder Whitney Williams and senior outfielder Emily Forbes each contributed one apiece.

After leaving one on base in both the fourth and fifth innings, the 49ers broke open a scoreless game in the sixth. After junior third baseman Jenny Rumbles walked, Malene singled and the two advanced on a passed ball. Smith brought Rumbles home with a single through the right side to break open the scoreless tie. Charlotte, which had the bases loaded with no outs could not push across any insurance runs in the sixth.

Hackett, as it turned out, did not need them. She retired the side in the top of the seventh to move to 15-16 on the season. along the way, Hackett passed Kristen Bowen in the record books for most strikeouts in a season. Bowen struck out a school record 170 as a junior in 2006, helping Charlotte to a share of the A-10 Regular-Season title.

Charlotte will take on second-seeded St. Bonaventure Thursday in the second game of the day, which has been moved up to 1 p.m.
