Late Rallies Fail to Push Charlotte Past Temple

Owls Shutout Niners 2-0

May 2, 2008

Box Score

Charlotte, N.C. - Despite leaving two runners on base in both the sixth and seventh innings, the Charlotte 49ers (31-26; A-10: 11-6) were shutout 2-0 by conference foe Temple (15-21; A-10: 4-15) Friday afternoon at the D.L. Phillips Softball Complex. The 49ers will attempt to avenge their loss tomorrow when they conclude the two-game series at noon.

Charlotte collected four hits in the contest, with junior second baseman Sarah Malene, junior catcher Jaime West, freshman designated player Kendra McCall and junior third baseman Jenny Rumbles each contributing one apiece. Freshman Katy Hackett (14-14) took the loss for the 49ers in the circle, striking out three batters to move her single season total to 156 to maintain her second-place spot in the record books.

Temple opened scoring early, scoring in the top of the first off an RBI single before homering to left center in the second to push the deficit to two. The Owls held two hits through five innings to maintain their lead before the 49ers threatened to score in the sixth when Rumbles, who reached on a single through the left side, was advanced to third on a freshman outfielder Whitney Williams walk and fly ball to left field by sophomore outfielder Serena Smith. Charlotte failed to capitalize, though, when West fouled out to third base, before finding itself in a similar situation in the bottom of the seventh. Temple walked sophomore utility Keri Palma with two outs before a McCall single down the left field line advanced her to second, but a Rumbles pop up to second base would suppress the rally.

Charlotte will conclude its 2008 regular season slate this weekend, with a doubleheader scheduled against Saint Joseph's Sunday following tomorrow's noon game.
