LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Louisville held off a three-run rally in the seventh inning of game two to sweep a doubleheader with the the the Charlotte 49ers softball team Sunday at Ulmer Stadium. After winning game one, 6-1, the Cardinals defeated the 49ers to take the second game, 5-3.
Charlotte (23-26, 5-14) scored all three of their runs in game two in the seventh. With the bases loaded, Stephanie Dunlap smacked a single to left field to drive in Lindsay Flemming, who reached on her second single of the day. Dunlap advanced to third and Kristy Constantino and Kiley Scott came in to score on the same play, taking advntage of a Shannon Nord throwing error. Louisville (24-24, 10-8 C-USA) ended the threat, however, when Autumn Lawson hit into a double play to end the game. The Cardinals, who led at one point 5-0, did most of their damage in the fourth, when they scored three times. Melissa Jacobo capped the burst with a double down the left field line to drive in Keola Calderon. Krystle Herold picked up the win and improved to 3-8. Amy Morse took the loss and fell to 8-9 for the year.
Cardinals pitcher Jessica Rak was the story of the first game. She allowed one hit in seven innings and struck out eight to earn the win. Lawson came up with the lone 49ers hit, blasting a solo home run to center in the second. Louisville took the lead for the first time in the fourth, scoring three runs to make the score 3-1. The Cards put the game out of reach in the fifth, when Jacobo delivered a three-run homer to center to provide the final margin. Betsy Thompson struck out five in four innings, but took the loss to fall to 11-12. Her streak of consecutive scoreless innings streak was snapped at 17 and two-thirds.
