CHARLOTTE, N.C. - UAB used a couple of big innings to take a pair of games from the Charlotte 49ers softball team, Saturday afternoon at the Phillips Sports Complex. In game one, the Blazers jumped out front early and went on to an 8-4 win. In game two of the doubleheader, UAB picked up a 4-1 win.
In game one, UAB (26-23, 8-12 C-USA) got on the board in the third inning, when Amanda Byrne, Chelsea McCall and Sara Christophel came home on Beth Mullins' double to left. The Blazers came up with another big inning the the fourth, scoring three more runs to take a 7-0 lead. Charlotte (14-30, 4-18 C-USA) tried to make a comeback, scoring twice in the bottom half of the inning. Melanie Thevenote reached base then scored when the next batter, Autumn Lawson sent a two-run homer over the fence. The 49ers added two more in the fifth to pull within 7-4, but were unable to pull any closer. Kerri Foster picked up the win, improving to 13-12, while Amy Morse took the loss and fell to 4-16.
The Blazers wasted little time getting in front in game two, scoring twice in the top of the first. Kelli Thompson gave UAB a 2-0 lead, when she smacked a double to drive in Cliffanie Engram and Christophel. They went on two plate one run in both the second and third. The 49ers scratched one run in fifth, when Lindsay Flemming came home on Lynne LaPorte's single. Shannon Carson fell to took the loss and fell to 3-6. Thompson earned the win, improving to 11-7.
The two teams close out their series on Sunday, playing a single game at 1:00.
