Charlotte, NC - The Charlotte 49ers softball team behind a 12- run third inning outslugged UAB, 19-12, in the final game of their three-game Conference USA series.
Kaycie Jones paced the 49ers with four hits including a grand slam, six RBI and three runs. Jamie West had three hits in the game. Becky Matthews scored four runs with two hits. Evan Miller, J.J. McVay and Becky Holt each connected on two hits in the game.
Charlotte plated the game's first run when Becky Matthews, who reached base on a double to right center field, scored on West's single to left field in the first inning.
Then, the 49ers exploded for 12 runs on nine hits in the third inning. Jones started the scoring off with a double down the right field line scoring Lauren Schmitz and Becky Matthews. West scored the next run on a Huffstetler infield single. Then, Jones scored on McVay's single to left field. McVay and Huffstetler would score on Laurie Roycroft's double to center field. Roycroft would score the inning's seventh run on Schmitz's single to right center field. Miller would score the eighth run of the inning on Becky Matthews single to center field. Jones would close out the scoring in the inning with a grand slam over the left field wall.
UAB crept back into the game with six runs on five hits in the top of the 4th inning. Then, UAB cut the Charlotte lead to 13-12, with another six runs on five hits in the fifth inning.

Charlotte's Kristen Bowen recorded her 12th win of the season after throwing four innings. Then, Christy Murray recorded her first save of the season by allowing only three hits and one unearned run over the final three innings of the game.
The 49ers battle Elon in their final home games of the season with a doubleheader, Wednesday, April 27 at 4 pm.
