CHARLOTTE, N.C. - The Charlotte 49ers softball team completed their first ever sweep of a Conference USA series, edging East Carolina, 2-1, Sunday afternoon at the Phillips Sports Complex. The win is the team's fifth-in-a-row.
Charlotte (23-24, 5-12 C-USA) took a 1-0 lead in the fourth inning, when Kristin White knocked a double to left field to score Nora Petrie all the way from first base. East Carolina (30-22, 9-12) tied things up in the sixth. Pinch hitting for Addie Chlebnikow, Alexis Heogh began the inning with a double to center. Whitney Godfrey entered as a pinch runner and scored on Angela Manzo's single to short. The 49ers answered in their half of the inning, however. Autumn Lawson got the team going with a double to the fence in right center and was lifted for pinch runner Chelsie Parrish. Lynne LaPorte moved her to third with a sacrifice, but when the Pirates tried to turn the double play, Dany'ele Hill threw the ball into the dugout and Parrish went home for the final 2-1 margin. East Carolina tried to tie it in the seventh, but Denise Atmar threw Dempsey out at the plate. Shannon Carson picked up the win in relief of Betsy Thompson to even her record at 3-3. Thompson struck out five and gave up just two hits in five innings of work. Dana Bowers pitched the final two thirds of the seventh to record her third save of the year.
Charlotte returns to action next weekend with a three-game series at Louisville. The schools will play a doubleheader on Saturday and one game on Sunday.
