Final Stats

Charlotte, N.C. - Charlotte 49ers senior Leah Heston cracked a pair of home runs and drove in six runs on the day as Charlotte (22-24, 4-12) swept a Conference USA softball doubleheader from East Carolina (30-21, 9-11), 8-0, 4-3, Saturday afternoon.

Heston connected on a three-run opposite-field home run in the five-run second inning as the 49ers took game one, 8-0. In game two, Heston's sixth roundtripper of the season broke a 3-3 tie in the bottom of the sixth inning to give the Niners the sweep.

In game one, Betsy Thompson (11-11) allowed just two hits to record the shutout while the 49ers scored early to put the game out of reach. Senior Stephanie Dunlap delivered an RBI-double in the first and then scored on Heston's single to left to put the 49ers ahead 2-0. In the second inning, senior Kiley Scott drilled a two-run double to center and, following a walk to Dunlap, Heston hit her three-run shot to right field. Heston added an RBI single in the sixth to complete the scoring, finishing the game 4-for-4 with five RBI.

In game two, the 49ers scored two runs in the third to take a 3-1 lead, but ECU's Amber Gill delivered a two-run home run in the top of the fourth to knot the score at 3-3. In the bottom of the sixth, after retiring the first two batters, ECU hurler Laurie Davidson (11-8) ran the count full on Heston, before giving up the solo home run that out the 49ers ahead, 4-3. In the top of the seventh, ECU's Kristin Johnson led off with a single up the middle, was sacrificed to second and reached third on an infield ground out, but 49ers pitcher Amy Morse (8-8) struck out Eva Herron to end the game.

The three-game series concludes, Sunday at 1:00 p.m.
