ST. LOUIS - Saint Louis took the first two games of their series with the Charlotte 49ers softball team Saturday, defeating the visiting Niners 1-0 and 3-0 at the Billiken Sports Center.

In game one, both pitchers held the opposition scoreless until Saint Louis (19-19, 3-12 C-USA) broke through in the bottom of the sixth. Nicole Bohnenstiehl laced a grounder to second, which was fielded Denise Atmar grabbed. Atmar threw home, but Adrienne May slid around the tag at home to score the only run of the game. Charlotte (18-23, 2-11 C-USA) got Atmar into scoring position in the seventh, but Billikens pitcher Heather Hubert struck out pinch hitter Kristin White to end the game. Hubert improved to 10-5 with the win. Betsy Thompson took the loss, falling to 9-10 on the year.

The strong pitching for the teams continued into the second game, but the sixth inning again proved to be the 49ers' undoing. Pinch runner Jessica Saucedo gave Saint Louis their first run of the game, scoring on Beth Yagge's single to left. The Billikens scored two more in the inning, when Cori Bittick and Yagge came home on a Janet Venorsky double to left. Leah Heston singled for Charlotte to open the top of the seventh, but was stranded there to end the game. Nicole Bohnenstiehl limited the 49ers to two singles and climbed to 8-12 with the win. Amy Morse pitched a complete game, allowing only five hits, but took the loss and fell to 6-8.

The teams finish the three-game series with a single contest at noon (CT) on Sunday.
