HATTIESBURG, Miss. - Southern Miss scored a pair of runs in the second and an another in the fourth to defeat the Charlotte 49ers softball team, 3-1, Friday evening at the USM Softball Field. The two teams are slated to wrap up the series on Saturday with a doubleheader.
Sam Moore put Charlotte (13-22, 4-11 C-USA) on the board in the top of the second. She belted her sixth home run of the season, knocking the ball over the right field fence to give her team an early 1-0 lead. Southern Miss (18-23, 4-9 in C-USA) answered with a pair of runs in the bottom half of the inning. Charity Butler drove a grounder through the left side of the infield to score Heather Bell and Jessica Huerta and give the Eagles the 2-1 lead. Bell doubled in the fourth and reached the plate on Auriel Jenkins' single down the left field line, giving Southern Miss the eventual 3-1 win. Jessica Holaway pitched a two-hitter to pick up her 10th win of the year. Amy Morse took the loss and fell to 4-10.
