Game 1 Box Score | Game 2 Box Score

BOONE, N.C. - The Charlotte 49ers softball team split a pair of one-run games with Appalachian Wednesday at the Watauga County Complex. The Mountaineers took game won, 3-2, but the 49ers answered with a 2-1 decision in game two.

Appalachian (7-32) got on the board first in game one, when Amber Handy singled to drive in Lauren Barrow. Charlotte (18-21) answered in the third inning, tying the game at 1-1 when Stephanie Dunlap came home on a Mountaineers miscue. They matched the Niners' run in the bottom half of the inning, however. Christa Hicks led off the inning with a double then came home on a fielder's choice to put her team in front, 2-1. The 49ers tied the game again in the fifth as Kiley Scott scored on a wild pitch, but Appalachian answered in the bottom of the fifth to provide the final margin. Charlotte had opportunities to score throughout, but stranded 12 baserunners. Lael Rorie earned the win and improved to 1-9 on the season. Betsy Thompson took the loss and fell to 9-9.

With the exception of the first inning, game two was a classic pitchers' duel. Charlotte scored twice in the top of the first, while Appalachian scored once in the bottom of the first for all of the runs in the game. Melanie Thevenote got the 49ers' offense going, driving a double into the gap to score Kristy Constantino and Dunlap. Kelly Doss accounted for the Mountaineers' lone run with a single to score Hicks. Amy Morse went the distance for the Niners to earn the win and go to 6-7 on the year. Jordan Arnold took the loss and fell to 4-14.
