CHARLOTTE, N.C. - After a one-hour delay due to showers earlier in the morning, the Charlotte and Houston softball teams got out to enjoy the afternoon weather, trading wins in a doubleheader. The 49ers rallied to pick up a 5-4 win in game one, while the Cougars took the second game, 5-2.
In game one, Charlotte (13-20, 4-9 C-USA) came back from a 4-0 deficit to win with five runs in the sixth inning. Autumn Lawson got the Niners on the board with a double to drive in Lynne LaPorte. The next batter, Denise Atmar brought the within two with a single to plate Kristy Constantino. Sam Moore delivered the biggest blast, however, driving in Lawson and Atmar with a three-run home run. Houston (25-17, 7-4 C-USA) had a shot to tie it in the seventh, but Dana Bowers came on in relief to pick up the final two outs. Amy morse scattered a pair of hits over 2.1 innings to earn the win, upping her record to 4-8. Jenny Johnson took the loss, falling to 7-7.
Johnson came back to pitch seven innings and earn the win in game two. The 49ers took a 2-1 lead in that one when Constantino brought in Laurie Roycroft with a single before the Cougars took the lead for good with two runs in the fourth. Arelis Ferreris got things started for Houston witha triple and later scored on Michelle Whipple's single. Whipple broke the tie later in the inning, coming home on Jaci Gonzalez' double. Johnson improved to 8-7 with the win, while Shannon Carson took the loss and fell to 2-4.
The teams will close their series on Sunday, when they play a single game starting at 1:00 at the Phillips Sports Complex. Admission is free.
