GREENSBORO, N.C. - UNC Greensboro used a late single and an early home run to hold off the Charlotte 49ers softball team, Thursday afternoon. After winning game one in the bottom of the seventh, 5-4, the Spartans built a lead early in game two and held on for a 6-4 win.
Joni Gomez was the hero for UNC Greensboro (25-8) in the first game of the doubleheader, driving in Lewis for the game-winner with a single. Down 4-0 entering the sixth, Charlotte (12-19) rallied to tie the game at 4-4. Kristy Constantino got things stared with a single to drive in Karianne Huffstetler. The next batter, Melanie Thevenote, stepped up and delivered a three-run hom run to left field, driving in Constantino and Lynne LaPorte. Johnson picked up the win for the Spartans and improved to 9-2. Dana Bowers took the loss in relief, falling to 5-4 for the year.
The Spartans won game two by getting to the 49ers' pitching early, getting on the board with two runs in the second and three more in the third. Charlotte tried to mount a rally, pulling within 5-4 in the fifth when Thevenote drove in Shannon Carson, but could come no closer. UNC Greensboro added an insurance run in the sixth to provide the final margin. Poole picked up the win to up her record to 4-1. Amy Morse fell to 3-8 with the loss.
This weekend, the Niners host a three-game series with C-USA rival Houston. The teams will play a doubleheader on Saturday before closing out the series with one game on Sunday. Both days' games will start at 1:00.
