TAMPA, Fla. - No. 23 South Florida took the first two games in the Charlotte 49ers softball team's three-game series in Tampa. After pickin up a 3-0 win in game one, the Bulls won the second game of the doubleheader, 5-2.

The 23rd ranked USF softball team took on the Charlotte 49ers (12-16, 3-7 C-USA) today in another conference series at the USF Softball Complex. The Bulls (38-10, 8-3 C-USA) took the first game 3-0 behind a stellar pitching performance by Leigh Ann Ellis. Ellis again pitched the Bulls to a victory in the second game as the Bulls defeated Charlotte by a score of 5-2. Holly Groves homered in the game to set a new USF single season record with eight homeruns.

In game one, South Florida (38-10, 8-3 C-USA) got going early, scoring a run in the bottom of the first. The Bulls added a run in the bottom of the third when Shelly Riker drew a leadoff walk and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Carmela Liwag. Riker then scored on an RBI single up the middle by Courtney Lewellen. The Bulls took a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the fourth. Renee Oursler scored on a Shelly Riker single. Leigh Ann Ellis got the win to bring her record to 20-5, holding Charlotte (12-16, 3-7 C-USA) to a Melanie Thevenote single.

The 49ers came up short in game two as well, despite jumping to a lead in the top of the third inning. Charlotte pushed two runs across using two hits and a couple of walks to take the 2-0 lead. The first run of the inning scored on a hit batter with bases loaded. On the next pitch, the second run came in on a wild pitch. The Bulls evened the game in the fourth, tying things with a Holly Groves home run to tie the game at 2-2. South Florida took at 3-2 lead in the bottom of the fifth. The Bulls added two more runs in the sixth. The Bulls scored both runs on a line drive hit to right field by Carmela Liwag.

The Bulls and 49ers round up their series tomorrow at the USF Softball Complex at 11:00 a.m. The game, originally scheduled for Noon was moved in efforts of avoiding bad weather.
