Box Score

CHARLOTTE, N.C. - The Charlotte 49ers softball team returned to action Tuesday, splitting a doubleheader at local rival Winthrop. After falling in the first game, 1-0, the 49ers bounced back to dominate game 12-2.

Pitcher Betsy Thompson delivered a strong outing for Charlotte (14-12) in game one, striking out nine, including six straight at one point. She surrendered two hits, however, including a double to Katy Agee in the second. She went on to score later in the inning for Winthrop (8-14) on an error for the only run of the game. Kristy Constantino went 2-for-4 at the plate to lead the 49ers, who stranded eight on the basepaths. Kelli Johnson picked up the win for the Eagles and climbed to 7-5 this season. Thompson took the loss and fell to 7-4.

The Niners definitely came to life offensively in game two, plating 12 runs on 16 hits in the nightcap. Stephanie Dunlap led the scoring effort, delivering a grand slam to right in the seventh, when the team erupted for six runs. Dunlap finished the game 2-for-4 with two runs and five RBI. Her homer was the sixth of the season, one shy of the school's single-season record, which she set as a freshman in 1999. In addition to Dunlap, Constantino, Leah Heston, Kiley Scott, Kristin White, Lindsay Flemming and Lynne LaPorte each contributed two hits to the Charlotte attack as the team scored in all but two innings.

The Niners return to action this weekend, when they play at Houston. The 49ers and Cougars play a doubleheader on Saturday before playing once Sunday in the series finale.
