CHARLOTTE, N.C. - Georgia Southern scored three runs in the eighth inning to pull out a 5-2 win over the Charlotte 49ers softball team, Sunday afternoon at the Phillips Sports Complex. The Eagles captured the 2004 49ers Invitational title with the win.
Charlotte (9-7) got on the board in the first, when Jessica Moore, the tourney's Most Valuable Hitter, came home on an error by Cary Moone, the tourney's Most Valuable Pitcher. Georgia Southern (13-7) answered with two runs in the third. Kim Griffin delivered the big hit, a two-run single that scored Shanita Black and Aurora Johnson. The Eagles remained in front, 2-1, until the sixth, when Denise Atmar evened the score for the 49ers with a double to left, driving in Autumn Lawson. The score stayed tied until the eighth. Georgia Southern loaded the bases with two outs, then picked up two when J.J. McVay was unable to handle a ball off the bat of Katie Roberts. They picked up another run later from Christi Aitken on an error by Kristen Bowen. Bowen dropped to 5-4 with the loss. Moone improved to 5-2 with the win, striking out 12 and allowing only four hits.
The Niners entered the title game 4-0 for the weekend after picking up a 3-0 win over James Madison in the first game of the day. Moore put Charlotte on the board in the first, coming home on Lawson's single to left field. The Niners also scored runs in the fourth and sixth. Laurie Roycroft drove in Atmar with a single in the fourth, then drove her in again in the sixth on a single to the shortstop. Christy Murray scattered five hits over seven innings to earn the win. She is now 4-3 for the year. Renee Bounds took the loss to drop to 3-2.
