Box Score

CHARLOTTE, N.C. - The Charlotte 49ers softball team split a doubleheader with Campbell Thursday afternoon at the Phillips Sports Complex. After falling behind in the first game, Charlotte rallied for the 9-7 win. In the second game, Campbell jumped out front early and went on pick up the 10-5 win.

In game one, Campbell (12-14) took a 2-0 lead in the first on solo home runs from Jessica Waters and Holly Harris. Charlotte (13-9) answered with a run of their own in the bottom half of the inning. With Nora Petrie at third, Leah Heston singled up the first base line to drive her in. The Camels added another run in the sixth with a Shannon O'Bryan home run to left. The 49ers came back in the bottom of the sixth, however, erupting for eight runs. Melanie Thevenote got things started with a solo blast to left. Petrie and Heston did the most damage, driving in two runs each. Petrie drove in Lynne LaPorte and Denise Atmar with a single, while Heston homered to center, driving in Stephanie Dunlap and herself. Betsy Thompson earned the win, improving to 7-3 for the season. She struck out seven with no walks in six innings of work. Michelle Carey took the loss, and fell to 4-6 on the year.

In the second game, the 49ers were unable to put together the offensive barrage that earned them the win in the first game. Campbell scored in the first, fourth and fifth innings to take a 9-0 lead before Charlotte got on the board. Facing the game's end due to the eight-run rule, the 49ers scored two in the bottom of the fifth to force the sixth inning. Pinch hitting for Kristy Constantino, Autumn Lawson drove in LaPorte to put the Niners on the board. Constantino reentered and scored from third on a wild pitch. The Camels scored one in the top of the sixth to make the score 10-2, but the 49ers stayed alive with a pair in the bottom of the inning. Heston was driven in by Kiley Scott's single to left, and Melanie Thevenote scored on Kristin White's single. The 49ers added one more in the bottom of the seventh. With one out, Thevenote popped out to second, driving in Petrie. Dunlap was called out at third to end the game, trying to advance on the throw to the plate. Kathy Freaney picked up the win for Campbell and evened her record at 5-5, while Amy Morse took the loss and fell to 4-4 for the year.
