CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - North Carolina rallied from a 5-1 deficit in game two to win, 6-5, giving them a sweep over the Charlotte 49ers softball team Wednesday afternoon. The Tar Heels topped the 49ers, 4-0, in game one.
After picking up two runs in the fourth, North Carolina (14-13) rallied for three runs in the seventh to pick up the win in the nightcap. With the score tied a 1-1, Charlotte (9-9) grabbed its first lead of the day in the third inning as Melanie Thevenote singled with two outs to collect two runners on an error by the Heels' right fielder. Autumn Lawson continued the two-out rally with her second home run of the game to score two more runs and give the 49ers a four-run lead. The Tar Heels picked up a pair of runs in the fourth then completed the comeback in the fifth. Snipes tied the game at 5-5, coming home on a passed ball. Quinn Porter accounted for the winning run, hitting a two-out single to give Carolina the victory. Alison Yin threw 4.1 innings in relief to earn the win and improved to 5-3. Dana Bowers came in for Betsy Thompson and took the loss, falling to 3-3.
The first game of the day didn't go as well offensively for the 49ers, who were limited to a lone hit from Lynne Laporte. The only other runner to reach base was Denise Atmar, who reached on a walk. The Tar Heels got on the board first in the second, when Jaclyn Holden came home on Jessica Graziano's single to center. After adding two more in the third, North Carolina put the game out of reach with their final run in the fifth. Crystal Cox threw her second straight shutout, striking out 11 and walking just one to move to 8-6 on the season. Shannon Carson took the loss, dropping to 2-1.
