CHARLOTTE, N.C. - Virginia topped the Charlotte 49ers softball team, 8-0, to win the championship game of the 49ers Invitational Sunday afternoon at the Phillips Sports Complex.
Charlotte (8-5) fell behind 4-0 in the first inning, when Virginia (12-6) took advantage of a pair of walks, a pair of errors and hits by Kelly McCabe and Ruby Rojas. After adding three more runs, the Cavliers sealed the 49ers fate with a Kristen Dennis home run in the top of the sixth.
In the Niners first game on Sunday, Charlotte jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first on runs by Susan Coyle and Stephanie Dunlap. Appalachian State closed within one in the bottom of the fourth, but Charlotte added a pair of runs in the seventh to help secure the win. Dunlap finished the game 2-of-3 with two doubles to lead the Niners. Betsy Thompson picked up the win, striking out six with no walks in seven innings.
In Sunday's other game, Virginia picked up a 8-0 win over Mount St. Mary's. At the conclusion of the day, Virginia's Kristen Dennis was named winning pitcher of the tournament. The Wahoos' Ruby Rojas was named top offensive player and Charlotte's Kiley Scott was the top defensive player.
Next weekend, Charlotte plays in the Winthrop Tournament. They open play Friday, March 16, taking on Illinois at 2:00.
