CHARLOTTE, N.C. - The Charlotte 49ers softball team was put out of the 49ers Invitational Sunday, falling to Wright State, 2-0. Virginia went on to claim the title with a 4-1 record after beating Akron 2-0 in the championship game.
For Charlotte, both teams held the other scoreless until the fifth, when Wright State plated Breiby, who came in as a pinch runner for Workman to take a 1-0 lead. The Raiders picked up an insurance run in the sixth, when Steiner reached on an error and scored on a wild pitch.
Scorless until the fourth inning, Virginia got on the board when Jessica Taylor came home on Ruby Rojas' double. Later in the inning, the Cavaliers made is 2-0 after Rojas came home on Laura Larquie's fly out to center field. Erin Horn pitched the Wahoos to the win, striking out 12 and giving up only three hits.
The 49ers will have most of the week off as the university is on Spring Break. Charlotte returns to action on Thursday, when they play a doubleheader at North Carolina. Next weekend, the team opens C-USA play with a three-game series at East Carolina.
