CHARLOTTE, N.C. - The Charlotte 49ers softball team split wins in a pair of games at the 49ers Invitational Saturday afternoon at the Phillips Sports Complex. After winning the first game, 5-2, over Ohio, the Niners fell in the second game, 7-5.
In game one, Charlotte (7-4) took the lead for good with three runs in the top of the third. Kiley Scott capped the scoring, coming home on an Elizabeth Burris infield single. The 49ers added two more in the seventh, with Kristin White and Scott scoring. Ohio (11-10) tried to rally in the bottom of the seventh, but could only muster a Randi Rico run. Pitcher Betsy Thompson scattered eight hits over seven innings to imporve to 4-2 on the year. The Bobcats' Kasey Dowd took the loss, falling to 1-5.
The Niners appeared to be on the way to another win in game two, taking a 4-0 lead in the bottom of the third on a Lynne LaPorte run. Mount Saint Mary's (1-4) had other plans though, scoring six in the top of the fifth to take a 6-4 lead. Charlotte pulled within one when White scored off Autumn Lawson's single in the bottom half of the fifth. Mount St. Mary's held off the rally, adding an insurance run in the top of the seventh to earn their first win of the season. Allison Moraca threw six and two-thirds innings to go to 1-2. The 49ers' Dana Bowers picked up her first loss, falling to 1-1.
In the other two games on Saturday, Virginia picked up wins over Ohio and Appalachian State. After edging Ohio, 3-2, in the first morning game, the Cavaliers beat Appalachain State, 8-2, in the second game of the morning session.
Charlotte returns to action Sunday, when they face Appalachian State at 10:00 a.m. at Phillips Field.
