CHARLOTTE, N.C. - The Charlotte 49ers softball team won two more games on the second day of the 49ers Invitational Saturday. In the first game, the 49ers beat Radford, 8-0, in five innings. They followed that with a 3-0 win over Stony Brook.
In the first game, Charlotte (12-6) scored two runs in each inning and shutout the opposition to pick up the win. Kristy Constantino and Autumn Lawson both had strong outings, going 3-for-3 at the plate. Constantino also added two runs and batted in two more. Stephanie Dunlap was 2-for-2, hitting her fourth home run of the season. Amy Morse improved to 4-2 with the win, striking out six and allowing only three hits. For Radford (4-13), Brandy Winstead took the loss and fell to 0-5.
Runs proved harder to come by in the second game. Melanie Thevenote came up big with a pair of RBI. Up 1-0 on the Sea Wolves, she drove in Kiley Scott with a single to center in the fourth. She later provided the 49ers' with their third and final run in the sixth, driving in Chelsie Parrish with a double. Parrish entered the game as a pinch runner after Lawson singled. Betsy Thompson struck out seven with only two hits and a walk to earn the win and go to 6-2 for the year. Stephanie Poetzsch took the loss for Stony Brook (1-2) and dropped to 1-1.
The 49ers Invitational concludes Sunday with three games. Charlotte plays Tulsa, who is also undefeated this weekend, in the first game at 10:00. The two teams could meet again in the championship, which is set to begin at 2:00. All of this weekend's games will be played at the Phillips Sports Complex. Admission is free.
