CHARLOTTE, N.C. - Virginia used an eight-run fifth inning to move past the Charlotte 49ers softball team, 11-1, on day one of the 49ers Invitational. The tournament, held at the Phillips Sports Complex, continues with four more games on Saturday before concluding on Sunday.
Already leading 3-1 entering the fifth, Virginia (7-10) put the game out of reach. Sarah Larquie powered the Wahoos offense, going 2-for-3 with a home run and two runs batted in.
Autumn Lawson accounted for a run for Charlotte (8-5) in the bottom of the first, driving in Lynne LaPorte. Amy Morse took the loss, allowing four earned runs in four and a third innings.
The Niners return to action with two games on Saturday. They play Liberty at 1:30, then Akron a 3:30.
