CHARLOTTE, N.C. - The Charlotte 49ers softball team rallied in the second game to split their doubleheader with Liberty Tuesday afternoon at Phillips Field. The Flames won game one, 5-1. The 49ers answered with a win in game two, 10-9.
Charlotte (4-2) fell behind early in game two, 6-3, but rallied to tie the game in the bottom of the second on a Susan Coyle single and an error on the centerfielder, which drove in Jen Herzig, Nora Petrie and Lynne LaPorte. Liberty (4-12) took a 9-6 lead half an inning later, but the 49ers hung four in the board in the sixth to pull out the victory. Kiley Scott broke the game open with a single to drive in Kristy Constantino and LaPorte. Dana Bowers earned the win in her first career outing. Carrie VanArtsdalen took the loss and fell to 1-5.
In game one, Liberty took a 2-0 lead when Allison Terry scored on an Ali Thompson double in the top of the fourth. The Flames then added another run in the fifth. Charlotte pulled within a pair in the bottom half of the inning on a Kristin White home run to center field. The Flames added a pair of insurance runs in the sixth to take the win. Thompson earned the win to improve her record to 3-4. Betsy Thompson took the loss and fell to 1-2 on the year.
The Niners return to action Wednesday, when they host Mount St. Mary's in a doubleheader at 2:00 at Phillips Field.
