CHARLOTTE, NC - The Charlotte 49ers softball team defeated Appalachian (3-2; 3-0) in a doubleheader this afternoon at Phillips Complex. With the two wins, Charlotte improved to 8-4 on the season.
Charlotte's Melanie Thevenote led the 49ers with four hits and two RBI in both games. Denise Atmar also had four hits including three hits and the game-winning home run in game one of the doubleheader.
In game one, pitcher Dana Bowers entered the game in relief with one out and the bases loaded with the score tied at 2-2 in the top of the seventh inning. She was able to get Appalachian State to hit into two force plays keeping the score tied entering the bottom of the seventh inning. Then, Atmar connected on a leadoff home run over the left field wall giving the 49ers a 3-2 win.
Charlotte's Melanie Thevenote connected on a game-tying home run over the center field wall in the bottom of the sixth inning of game one. Appalachian State took a 2-1 lead after scoring two runs on three hits in the top of the sixth inning.
In game two, Charlotte blanked Appalachian State, 3-0. Charlotte pitchers Betsy Thompson and Shannon Carson combined on a seven-inning shutout as they limited Appalachian State to one hit. Thompson recorded the win after throwing five strong scoreless innings. While, Carson pitched the final two scoreless innings to record the save.
The 49ers scored the only run they would need in the first inning when Thevenote connected on a double that scored Lynne LaPorte with the game's first run. Sam Moore homered in the third inning increasing Charlotte's lead to 2-0. Atmar connected on a double in the sixth inning that scored Thevenote with the game's final run.
