LYNCHBURG, Va. - The Charlotte 49ers softball team won their third- and fourth-straight games, sweeping Liberty in a doubleheader Tuesday afternoon. After winning the opener, 4-1, the 49ers went on to complete the sweep with an 8-6 win in game two.

In the first game, Liberty (7-11) took an early lead as Allison Terry singled and later scored on a single to right by Tiffany Johnson to give the Flames a 1-0 lead. Ali Thompson took a no-hitter, and a 1-0 lead, into the sixth before Charlotte (9-6) scored two-runs after Nora Petrie lead off with a single to left and then scored on an error by Johnson on a Lynne LaPorte ground ball. Stephanie Dunlap followed with a double to right center to drive in LaPorte. In the top of the seventh, the 49ers added two more runs, one of which came off a lead off homer by Autumn Lawson to give the 49ers a 4-1 lead, which proved to be the final score in game one. Betsy Thompson picked up the win and improved to 4-2 on the season.

In the nightcap, Liberty jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first, as Amanda Maska singled to lead off the inning and scored a few batters later on a bases loaded walk to Lauren Hahn. After a second Flames run, the 49ers got on the board in the top of the second to tie the game at 2-2, but the Liberty answered in their half of the inning, scoring three runs to give Liberty a 5-2 lead. Charlotte and Liberty exchanged runs in the third, to give the Flames a 6-3 lead. However, in the top of the fifth, the 49ers scored four runs to take a 7-6 lead, and added another in the seventh to finish off the doubleheader sweep with a 8-6 victory. Dana Bowers evened her record at 1-1 with her win in relief.
