The Charlotte 49ers softball team picked up two wins to begin the First Pitch Classic, defeating Robert Morris, 10-0, and College of Charleston, 6-4. The tournament continues with four games on Saturday and concludes with three games on Sunday.
Autumn Lawson led the team in hitting against Robert Morris with two hits, a double and a home run, and scored three runs. Sam Moore also had two hits, including a double, in the 49ers' win. Pitcher Amy Morse recorded the shutout as she scattered two hits with five strikeouts in five innings.
Betsy Thompson picked up the win against College of Charleston, striking out four players with zero walks. The 49ers were behind 4-3 in the seventh inning, when Karianne Huffstetler scored on a wild pitch to tie the game. Sam Moore connected on a two-run triple to give the 49ers the lead for good, 6-4, later in the seventh.
In other action on Friday, East Tennessee State beat Robert Morris, 11-3, and College of Charleston downed ETSU, 8-0.
Admission to all games is free. The Phillips Sports Complex is located on the Charlotte campus below the Irwin Belk Track and Field Center.
