BUIES CREEK, N.C. - The Charlotte 49ers softball team split a pair of games with Campbell to open the 2001 season at Eakes Athletic Complex Wednesday afternoon.

Game one saw Campbell (4-3) take a 1-0 lead in the fifth inning. Jessica Kurella reached on an error, stole second, and scored Jessica Waters' base hit. Charlotte (1-1) tied it in the top of the sixth, as Susan Coyle, who led off the inning with a triple, scored on Stephanie Dunlap's ground ball. Waters led off the bottom of the eighth with a base hit, and moved to second on Leslie Standiford's bunt single. Shannon O'Bryan doubled, scoring Waters to win the game. Coyle led the 49ers, going 2-3 with a triple. Betsy Thompson took the loss, throwing a complete game with five strikeouts and no walks.

The 49ers jumped out to a 2-0 lead in game two in the fourth inning. After three consecutive singles, Coyle reached by error, scoring Kiley Scott and Leah Heston. The Camels plated one run in the sixth when Carey's base hit chased Carolyn Fortney home. The 49ers added one in the top of the seventh, as Vikki Van Dam tripled and later scored on a wild pitch. Amy Morse struck out seven to earn the win. Thompson pitched the seventh to earn the save.

Charlotte returns to action Tuesday, Feb. 27, when they host Appalachian State in a doubleheader at 2:00.
