COLUMBIA, S.C. - South Carolina swept the Charlotte 49ers softball team in a doubleheader Wednesday afternoon at Beckham Field. The Gamecocks, ranked 20th nationally, defeated the 49ers, 9-1, in the first game rallied to win game two, 3-2, in eight innings.
Megan Cornett led South Carolina (9-3) to the win in the first game, going 3-for-4 with a home run and a double. She scored three runs and had two RBIs. Debralee Troesh went 2-for-3, scored one run and drove in three. Megan Matthews earned the win and improved to 4-1, while Shannon Carson fell to 1-2.
In game two, Charlotte (5-4) took a 2-0 lead in the third as Autumn Lawson scored on an error by the Gamecock's Danielle Quinones. South Carolina cut the lead in the bottom of the third as Cornett hit a sacrifice fly to right field to score Nancy Crane. In the bottom of the seventh, Samantha Jennings tied the game with her second home run of the season. In the eighth, the Gamecocks scored the winning run when Amber Curtis scored on a Kristin Hall single. Aleca Johnson is 1-0 with the win. Dana Bowers took the loss and is 2-1 for the year.
Charlotte plays their home-opener this Sunday, when they host Virginia Tech in a doubleheader.
