RALEIGH, N.C. - The Charlotte 49ers softball team kicked off the 2002 campaign with a win on Friday, defeating Boston University, 3-2, in eight innings in the first round of the Triangle Classic. In the second game, the 49ers fell to Minnesota, 3-1.

Betsy Thompson picked up the win for Charlotte (1-1) in the first game. Leah Heston powered the offense with three hits and two RBI. She also scored a run.

Heston was also one of the Niners' top batters in the second game, going 1-for-3 and scoring the team's only run. Kristy Constantino also went 1-for-3 at the plate. Amy Morse took the loss, surrendering eight hits.

Charlotte returns to action Saturday, when they play the winner of Radford and UNC Greensboro at 1:00. The 49ers are the No. 1 seed in the silver bracket. With a win, they will play again on Sunday. If they lose, the Niners play at 3:00 on Saturday.
