CHARLOTTE, N.C. - Following a career season, junior defender Mikel Casey (Greensboro, N.C./Grimsley) was named to the 2001 NSCAA Third-Team All-South squad. As a tri-captain for the Charlotte 49ers women's soccer team, she helped lead the team to a 7-2-1 record in C-USA and a return to the conference semifinals.

For her efforts on the season, Casey was the team's lone representative on the all-Conference USA first-team. Following the week of Sept. 17-23, she became just the fourth player in school history to be named to the Soccer America National Team of the Week.

Casey recorded her best statistical season, thus far, in her career for Charlotte, this past season. She set new career-highs with three goals and five assists for 11 points, placing her second on the team. The five assists paced the young 49er team, which finished with an overall record of 9-7-4 under third year head coach Neil Roberts. She helped lead the 49er defense to a 0.93 GAA, which tied the school-record set in 1997. The team posted six shutouts on the season, including four against conference opponents. Her nine career assists rank her 10th all-time at Charlotte.

An excellent student, she boasts a cumulative G.P.A. of 3.524 with a major in Communication Studies and a minor in Psychology.
