Charlotte, NC - Three Charlotte 49ers women's soccer players have been named to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District III women's soccer team, selected by CoSIDA. Sophomores Lindsey Beam (Charlotte, NC/Riverside HS) and Nicole Labuda (Climax, NY/Greenville HS) earned first-team honors. While, junior Kelsie Ormsby (Raleigh, NC/Garner HS) earned second-team honors. These three players were also named to the Atlantic 10 academic all-conference team.
Beam, Labuda and Ormsby join seven other former Charlotte 49ers women's soccer players that have earned Academic All-District III honors. Assistant coach Sarah Judy Denton was also an academic all-district selection for the 49ers in 2000. Charlotte has had at least two players named academic all-district in each of the last three seasons.
Beam, who earned first-team All-Atlantic 10 honors, has a 4.00 GPA in pre-special education. Beam leads the Atlantic 10 and ranks second in the nation with a school single-season record 18 assists this season. She tied her career-high with five goals as well. She finished the regular season second in the Atlantic 10 with a team-leading 28 points. Beam also earned A-10 Player of the Week and Soccer Buzz Elite Team of the Week honors twice. She was named MVP of the Carolina's Cup at Clemson University earlier this season. As a result of being named first-team academic all-district, Beam will represent the district on the national ballot for Academic All-America honors.
Labuda , who earned honorable mention All-Atlantic 10 honors, has a 4.00 GPA in mathematics. She scored her first career goal in the 49ers second game of the season against Mercer. She then proceeded to score seven more to finish the regular season second on the team with eight goals. She recorded two multiple goal games. She was named to the all-tournament team at the Carolina's Cup earlier this season after scoring the game-winning goal in the 49ers' victory over South Carolina. As a result of being named first-team academic all-district, Labuda will represent the district on the national ballot for Academic All-America honors.
Ormsby, who earned second-team All-Atlantic 10 honors, has a 3.89 GPA in biology. She is currently fourth on the team with a career-high four goals and 11 points. She scored two goals including the game-winner in the 49ers 4-1 win over A-10 foe St. Bonaventure earlier this season. She moved from the midfield to defender this season and helped anchor a 49ers defense which recorded three shutouts and limited eight foes to a goal or less.
