Charlotte, NC - The Charlotte 49ers women's soccer team, after road victories at Xavier (3-0) and at seven-time A-10 regular season Dayton (1-0) this past weekend, sweep the Atlantic 10 Conference Weekly honors. Sophomore forward Rachel Mees (Cinti, OH/St. Ursula) earned A-10 Player of the Week honors after scoring three of Charlotte's four goals including the game-winner in both games. Freshman goalkeeper Juli Black (Jamestown, NC/Ragsdale) becomes the first 49er to claim A-10 Rookie of the Week honors after recording back-to-back shutouts at Xavier and Dayton.
This is the third time this season that Charlotte has had a player named A-10 Player of the Week. Sophomore midfielder Lindsey Beam has earned the honor twice including last week. The 49ers as an entire athletic program have earned 16 A-10 player or rookie of the week awards this season.
Mees, an Ohio native, had a great homecoming this past weekend. She scored her first career goal just over three minutes into the Xavier game last Friday. Then, she added her second goal just over a minute later for her first career multiple goal game. In the Dayton game, Mees scored the game's only goal with just under a minute left in regulation giving the 49ers a dramatic 1-0 victory.
Mees scored her three goals this weekend on only four shots. She currently is fifth on the team with three goals and nine points. She is tied for second on the team with three assists.
Black recorded her first two career solo shutouts last weekend. She faced 23 shots and made seven saves in the shutout at Xavier. Then, she blanked Dayton with seven saves on 28 shots. She lowered her goals against average to 1.15 and she has 53 saves on the season.
Mees, Black and the rest of the 49ers women's soccer team put their four-game winning streak on the line this Saturday, October 22 when they host Richmond at 7 pm at Transamerica Field.
