CHARLOTTE, N.C. - The Charlotte 49ers women's soccer team (6-2-1, 4-0-0 C-USA) had two of its players named as Conference USA Players of the Week, for the week ending Sept. 30.
Jennie Leeder (Spring, Tex./Klein), a junior tri-captain, was named the co-offensive player, this past week, with Marquette's Jill Vendetti. Leeder returned from a broken nose to record the game-winning goals in both matches over the weekend. Her goal at Southern Miss proved to be the difference, as the Niners won 1-0, on Friday, September 28. She followed that match with the decisive first goal twenty minutes into the match, as Charlotte defeated South Florida, 3-0, on Sunday, September 30. Leeder currently is tied for the team lead in goals with three and is one point behind teammate Leslie Canales (Raleigh, N.C./Enloe) for the team lead with eight points.
Jenn Howell (Marietta, Ga./McEachern) earned her second straight conference defensive player of the week honor after playing in goal during both shutouts. Howell broke the school-record for career shutouts with 12 by making three saves in the defeat of Southern Miss. The previous mark was 11 held by Jessica Brooks (1995-98). On Sunday, Howell again stymied the opposition by posting her fifth shutout of the season, a new personal season-high, and the 13th of her career. By not allowing a goal over the weekend, Howell extended her streak of consecutive minutes played without allowing a goal to 385:27, dating back to September 18 versus Davidson. She has made 38 saves this season, while recording a Goals Against Average of 0.87.
Charlotte returns home this Thursday, October 4, versus regional foe Furman at 7:00 p.m. The 49ers will look to extend their current six-match winning streak, which includes four straight in Conference USA action. Charlotte currently sits in a first-place tie with Marquette and Cincinnati for the conference lead, with identical 4-0-0 records.
