CHARLOTTE, N.C. - For the second straight week, the Charlotte 49ers women's soccer team had a player named to the Soccer America National Team of the Week. Mikel Casey (Greensboro, N.C./Grimsley) , a junior defender, was named to the team this week, Sept. 17-23, following a 3-0 week for the 49ers. Her honor follows that of fellow junior goalkeeper Jenn Howell (Marietta, Ga./McEachern) who was named to the team, last week (Sept. 10-16).
A 49er tri-captain, Casey has bolstered a defense that opened its conference play this past weekend with back-to-back shutouts over Houston and Tulane. In the Houston match, she recorded her first goal of the season. Charlotte is currently riding a four-game winning streak, giving up only two goals in their last five matches. The 49ers are presently in a four-way tie for first place in Conference USA.
Last season, she was named third-team all-Conference USA following a career-high seven points on two goals and three assists. A versatile player for Charlotte, Casey has played either on defense or in the midfield for head coach Neil Roberts.
The 49ers (4-2-1, 2-0-0) will continue play this weekend at conference opponents Southern Miss and South Florida. Charlotte will return to face Furman at Transamerica Field on Thursday, October 4, at 7:00 p.m.
