CHARLOTTE - For the second straight week, Charlotte 49ers women's soccer goalkeeper Jenn Howell (Marietta, Ga./McEachern) has earned high recognition. After being named to the Soccer America National Team of the Week (Sept. 10-16), she followed it up, this week, by being named the Conference USA Defensive Player of the Week (Sept. 17-23).
During the week, Howell registered back-to-back shutouts in three matches. Both shutouts were over conference opponents and lifted the 49ers to 2-0 in league play, 4-2-1 overall. The 49ers are currently riding a four-game winning streak, backed by Howell's play. On the season, she has made 33 saves in the 49ers' seven matches, while posting a GAA of 1.12.
With the back-to-back shutouts over the weekend, Howell moved into a first-place tie in school history with 11 career shutouts. Her mark also ranks seventh in C-USA history. As a junior, she has been named the conference defensive player of the week at least once in each of her three seasons. Each time, she recorded back-to-back weekend shutouts in league play to pick up the honor.
The 49ers will continue play this weekend, as they travel to conference foes Southern Miss on Friday and South Florida on Sunday. Charlotte will next play at home on Thursday, October 4, versus regional foe Furman at 7:00 p.m.
