CHARLOTTE, NC - The Charlotte 49ers women's soccer team dramatically tied their Conference USA Tournament match UAB, 1-1, when Courtney Crandell scored with one second left in regulation. The game ended in a 1-1 double overtime tie but UAB advanced to the semifinals on penalty kicks, 3-0.

With the loss, Charlotte's season ends with a 7-11-2 record. While, UAB's record goes to 13-4-1.

"This game was a microcosm of our season," Charlotte coach Neil Roberts said. "We weren't very good in the first half. Then we battled back in the second half."

UAB took the early lead when Jenny Rynders scored on a Jill Knottek assist in the 16th minute of the match.

Both teams had several scoring chances throughout the remainder of the game but great defensive plays by both sides kept the score, 1-0.

Then, Charlotte was fouled about 10 yards outside the penalty box with five seconds left in the match. Courtney Crandell took the free kick and blasted the ball over the wall past UAB goalkeeper Katie Forbis into the back of the net at the 89:59 mark.

"We have a won a lot of games over the last couple of years in the closing minutes," Roberts said. "Courtney's goal was awesome."

Charlotte had a great scoring chance in the second overtime on a corner kick. Kim Moore headed a Tiffany Ross corner kick toward the UAB goal but a Blazer defender knocked the ball off the line at the last minute.

The game remained tied through both overtimes so the game went to penalty kicks to determine who advanced in the tournament. UAB goalkeeper Katie Forbis stopped all three Charlotte penalty kick attempts. While UAB's Briana McCarty, Jill Knottek and Tara Kidwell connected on their penalty kicks sending the Blazers into the CUSA Tournament semifinals.
