Greenville, N.C. - Freshman Kim Miles (Raleigh, N.C./Leesville Road) poked home a long pass from Megan Terlip (Kingwood, Texas/Kingwood) at 57:03 of the second half to give the Charlotte women's soccer team a 2-1 road victory over East Carolina in the 49ers regular-season finale. The win leaves the 49ers record at 9-6-3 overall with a 7-2-1 mark in Conference USA. With the win, the 49ers assure themselves of at least a #3 seed in next week's Conference USA Tournament in Milwaukee, Wisc.
"This type of game is always going to be a war," said 49ers third-year head coach Neil Roberts, who spent four years coaching the Pirates before coming to Charlotte. "That was a hard-fought game between two quality teams and we were fortunate to come out on top. As far as returning to ECU, it was nice to get the victory but I think the players made a bigger deal out of it than I did."
The 49ers got on the board first at 10:16 when Terlip, also a freshman, scored her second goal of the year on a direct free kick from 20 yards out. The Pirates rallied to tie the score, 1-1, at 28:02 when Kelly Gray's corner kick found the 49ers net.
Still tied at the half, the 49ers struck early in the second half. Junior Mikel Casey (Greensboro, N.C./Grimsley) fed the ball at midfield to Terlip, who hit a long cross into the middle of the area. Miles scored from just inside the penalty box to give the Niners the win. The goal was Miles second of the year, and her second in as many games. She also scored in the 49ers 3-1 victory over Louisville, last Sunday.
By registering five saves in the triumph, 49er keeper Jenn Howell (Marietta, Ga./McEachern) passed Heather Bridgewater (1994-95) to become the school's all-time leader in career saves with 221. The previous mark was 218. It marks the second school record Howell, a junior, has broken this season following the career shutout mark, which stands at 13.
