Rhode Island Topples Charlotte 1-0 on Senior Day

Ozimek tallies four shots for scoreless 49ers

Oct. 28, 2007

Box Score

Charlotte, N.C. - Despite a four-shot effort by senior midfielder Lindsey Ozimek, the Charlotte 49ers women's soccer team fell to conference foe Rhode Island (11-5-2; A-10: 5-3-1) Sunday afternoon at Transamerica Field on Senior Day. Even with its first conference loss this season, Charlotte (13-4-1; A-10: 8-1-1) remains in possession of first place in the Atlantic 10.

Rhode Island scored the game's lone goal just two minutes into the contest as Dora Larusdottir sent a shot into the back of the net from 30 yards out, threading the ball over sophomore goalkeeper Lauren Brown's head and into the right corner.

"I think that the scouting report on us is that we have issues with distribution in the back," head coach Jon Lipsitz said. "Rhode Island pounced on that early."

"When you give up a goal early, you have to fight in the box. I'm disappointed with our effort in the box, as we didn't win balls. We didn't take care of details, so we didn't deserve the win."

Rhode Island enjoyed a 14-11 advantage in shots, with a 7-6 advantage in shots on goal. In addition to Ozimek's four shots, Rex, sophomore midfielder Hailey Beam and freshman forward Sam Huecker each tallied two shots apiece.

The loss marks the last regular season home game for five 49er seniors--defender Brittany Dorsch, defender Sara Jane Harris, forward Rachel Mees, Ozimek and midfielder Ashley Rex--who have combined for 42 wins in the last four years, including the 2006 A-10 regular season championship.

Charlotte takes to the field for its final regular season game Saturday at Saint Louis before returning to Transamerica Field to host the A-10 Championship Nov. 8-11. With a win at Saint Louis, the 49ers will clinch their second consecutive regular season conference title.
