CHARLOTTE, N.C. - On Friday, October 26, the Charlotte 49ers women's soccer team fell to conference leader Cincinnati, 1-0. In a match that was evenly played, the 49ers battled defensively in the second half only to come up short.
At 16:50, Cincinnati forward Amy Simonson collected a ball following a pass from defender Heather Herweh and chipped the ball over the head of a charging Jenn Howell (Marietta, Ga./McEachern) for the lone goal of the match.
The 49ers had their chances throughout the match, with a few breakaways, only to be detered by the Bearcat defense. Howell made a diving save on a Lisa Stephens shot from just inside the six-yard box with thirteen minutes remaining to keep the deficit at one.
With the loss, Charlotte's home unbeaten streak versus Conference USA opponents is snapped at 27 matches. During the streak, which began on September 29, 1996, the 49ers recorded 23 wins and four ties.
Charlotte (7-6-3, 5-2-1 C-USA) will resume play on Sunday in their final home match of the season versus Louisville at 1:00 p.m. Prior to the match, the 49ers will recognize the accomplishments of midfielder Dawn Geyer (Bellbrook, Ohio/Alter) on the annual Senior Day. Cincinnati improves 13-3 overall, including a 8-0 mark in conference action.
