Box Score

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - In their final non-conference match of the season, the Charlotte 49ers were defeated by #21 Wake Forest, 2-1, in Winston-Salem, N.C., on Tuesday evening.

After facing a 1-0 deficit at half, the 49ers battled back to tie the match at 51:59. Sophomore Tiffany Ross (Lawrenceville, Ga./Collins Hill) took a rebound off a corner kick and crossed it in front to a streaking Kim Miles (Raleigh, N.C./Leesville Road), who headed it towards the goal, however, a Wake defender was there to make the team save. The ball remained uncontrollable in the box and junior tri-captain defender Mikel Casey (Greensboro, N.C./Grimsley) headed in the loose ball past goalkeeper Erin Regan for the Niners' goal.

The Demon Deacons scored the first goal of the match, at 32:01, when forward Emily Taggart raced past the 49er defense and rolled the ball under a diving Jenn Howell (Marietta, Ga./McEachern) after receiving the pass up the middle from midfielder Katherine Winstead.

Later in the second half, at 58:25, a 49er defender was called for a hand ball inside the penalty box, setting up a Wake penalty kick. Stacy Roeck converted the attempt to the lower left corner past a diving Howell for the game-winner.

The 49ers had their chances throughout the game, including a few shots that either hit the posts or crossbar. With about five and a half minutes remaining, Jill Hayes (Hubert, N.C./Swansboro) broke free from the Demon Deacon defense, only to kick the ball straight into the open arms of Regan.

Charlotte (7-5-3) wraps up its home schedule this weekend when it hosts conference co-leader Cincinnati on Friday and Louisville on Sunday. Prior to the match versus Louisville, the 49ers will honor the accomplishments of senior Dawn Geyer (Bellbrook, Ohio/Alter) on the annual Senior Day.
