CHARLOTTE - The Charlotte 49ers women's soccer team dropped a 1-0 heartbreaker to in-state and regional opponent NC State on Tuesday evening at Transamerica Field. On a cold, windy evening, junior goalkeeper Jenn Howell (Marietta, Ga./McEachern) kept the 49ers in the match most of the night, registering three saves on nine Wolfpack shots. With just twelve minutes gone in the first half, Howell stopped a breakaway attempt by NC State's Adrienne Barnes on a point-blank attempt.
NC State scored the only goal of the match when Lindsay Underwood corralled a loose ball inside the penalty box on the right side and fed it to Jordan Allison, who placed the ball in the upper left hand corner of the goal past the hands of Howell at 57:21.
Charlotte's best chance to score in the second half came on a 2-on-1 break, when freshman forward Nicole Miller (Kernersville, N.C./East Forsyth) fired a shot from 20 yards out into the arms of Wolfpack keeper Juliana Gomez.
With the loss, Charlotte, ranked 7th in the SoccerBuzz regional poll for this week, falls to 7-4-2 on the season. NC State wins its fifth straight match to improve to 7-5-0 overall. The 49ers will return to the field this Friday evening versus C-USA rival Saint Louis at 7:00 p.m at Transamerica Field.
