Charlotte, N.C. - Behind two goals by freshman midfielder Sam Huecker, pushing her weekend total to four goals, the Charlotte 49ers women's soccer team rallied to beat Richmond 2-1 in overtime Sunday afternoon at Transamerica Field. The 49ers have only allowed two goals in just over 565 minutes of Atlantic 10 action.
"I think this game was what we expected," head coach Jon Lipsitz said. "These types of games come down to moments. While both teams had moments, we converted our moment in overtime."
Richmond got on the board early in the second half when Jessie Wolfe sent a shot to the back of the net from 25 yards out in the 54th minute.
Just over fifteen minutes later, the 49ers tied the score when Huecker scored on a shot from close range off assists from senior midfielder Lindsey Ozimek and freshman midfielder Danielle Mayeaux.
The 49ers ended the game five minutes into overtime when Huecker headed in a throw-in assist from freshman defender Katie Davies.
After also scoring twice in the Charlotte shutout of George Washington Friday evening, Huecker's weekend goal total hit four.
"[Huecker] has consistently been a strong presence for us and has earned scoring opportunities in practice," Lipsitz said. "This weekend, after building confidence, she has been finishing her in-game opportunities."
The victory, in which Charlotte enjoyed a 12-7 shots advantage, marks the third consecutive 49ers overtime win over Richmond.
