Box Score

CHARLOTTE - The Charlotte women's soccer team continued its opening Conference USA weekend with a 1-0 victory over the Tulane Green Wave on Sunday afternoon. With the win, the 49ers improve their record to 4-2-1, 2-0-0 in C-USA. It also marks the fourth consecutive victory for Charlotte on the season.

After a scoreless first half, with Charlotte dominating shots 12-1, the 49ers got on the board early in the second half. Freshman forward Leslie Canales (Raleigh, N.C./Enloe) scored her second goal of the week, and second of her career, on a cross from the right side from preseason all-Conference USA selection Jill Hayes (Hubert, N.C./Swansboro) at 50:06. Hayes received the initial pass from midfielder Kim Miles (Raleigh, N.C./Leesville Road) before dribbling towards the endline and crossing the ball to Canales. The assist for Miles marks the first point of her Charlotte career.

Junior goalkeeper Jenn Howell (Marietta, Ga./McEachern) stopped none of the four Tulane shots in the shutout. By registering back-to-back shutouts this weekend, Howell, a member of the Soccer America National Team of the Week, last week, moved into a first-place tie with Jessica Brooks (1995-98) for career shutouts in 49er history with 11. On the week, Howell only allowed one goal in three matches.

Nearly every 49er who saw action today registered a shot. Nine of ten starting field players recorded at least one, while four of seven substitutions also notched at least one shot for Charlotte. With the win today, Charlotte extended its home unbeaten streak against conference opponents to 26 games. The streak began on September 29, 1996 and has included 23 wins and three ties.

Tulane falls to 1-4-0, 1-1-0 in Conference USA. Sara Simpson made twelve saves in goal for the Green Wave.

The 49ers will resume play this weekend, as they travel to Southern Miss on Friday. In the second game of the Conference USA weekend, the 49ers will play at South Florida on Sunday. Charlotte's next home match will be Thursday, October 4, as they face regional foe Furman at 7:00 p.m.
