Box Score

CHARLOTTE, N.C. - The Charlotte women's soccer team kicked off its 2001 home season with a 2-1 victory over cross-county rival Davidson on Tuesday evening. The 49ers dominated the Wildcats much of the evening, outshooting the 'Cats, 20-7, en route to victory.

The 49ers scored first on a goal by junior defender Shannon Roberto (Fairfield, Ohio/Badin), who received a pass in front of the goal mouth from junior midfielder Jennie Leeder (Spring, Texas/Klein) at 29:23. Less than four and a half minutes later, junior defender Mikel Casey (Greensboro, N.C./Grimsley) cleared a ball from her own penalty box. The ball brushed the top of the head of sophomore forward, and preseason all-conference, Jill Hayes (Hubert, N.C./Swansboro) before landing at the feet of freshman forward Leslie Canales (Raleigh, N.C./Enloe). Canales then took the ball, jetted past two Davidson defenders and fired a shot past the outstretched arms of Wildcat keeper Sarah Hobart to give the 49ers a 2-0 advantage at 33:46.

In the second half, Charlotte once again dominated much of the play. However, Davidson scored the lone goal of the half off a direct kick from the right side by Heather Maloney. Maloney placed the ball over the wall and into the far side of the Charlotte net to break the shutout. Junior goalkeeper Jenn Howell (Marietta, Ga./McEachern) recorded one save in the victory.

With the win, Charlotte remains unbeaten versus Davidson, improving its series record to 7-0-1, since 1994. On the season, Charlotte wins its second straight match to improve its record to 2-2-1. Davidson falls to 0-5-0 thus far this season.

Charlotte will continue its three-game homestand with the opening of conference play, this weekend. On Friday, September 21, the 49ers play host to the Cougars of Houston at 7 p.m. The Tulane Green Wave invade the friendly confines of Transamerica Field on Sunday, September 23, at 1 p.m.
